Analog Devices’ University Program in the Philippines

The ADI University program in the Philippines is comprised of many different activities that provide engineering students with the opportunity to further develop the theory and application of analog circuit design. The activities include:

University Caravan

The University Caravan is a program that promotes regular visits of ADI to various partner Universities for Recruitment, Technical Workshops and Company Talks. This includes the New College Graduate hiring program and Student visits to ADI Philippines.  The New College Graduate program requires a team from Analog Devices composed of Hiring manager, Engineers and HR to visit the university to scout for the best and brightest graduating students. The identified top students will go through a selection process composed of technical examination and interview. Those that will pass our employment requirements will be given an opportunity to work for the company upon graduation.  These have been very productive program in terms of hiring and promoting ADI as a Technology Company of choice for students.

University Caravan also includes conducting ADI company talks, Experts visits, Demonstration of ADI products and technology, and Training to Universities. This activity is seen to be effective in promoting ADI as world class Technology Company and an Employer of choice.

Below are some of university events where Analog Devices participated.

  11. BS and MS Scholarship Programs.  The Bachelor of Science (BS) and Masters of Science (MS) scholarship program has been the key continuing education program for current and future employees of Analog Devices.

BS and MS Scholarship Program

The BS Scholarship Program is being offered to top students carefully selected from the Analog Devices Partner Universities. The identified top students will go through a qualification process composed of technical examination and interview. Those that will pass our BS scholarship selection process will be offered a scholarship from their current year in the course until they graduate. This program allows Analog Devices to connect to the best and brightest students while at the university, and securing a job in Analog Devices upon completion of their engineering degree. Currently, the BS scholarship program is supporting 25 students who are taking courses on electronics and communication, computer and electrical engineering in different ADI partner Universities.

The MS scholarship program is for incumbent employees who would like to pursue higher education.  The program is available for employees who are graduates of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. The MS program is currently supporting 21 employees qualified through a selection process to enroll on the course.  The present course is MS in Electronics and Communication Engineering with major in Microelectronics.  The MS program is being implemented by MAPUA Institute of Technology, a respected Engineering University in Manila, Philippines. The classes are conducted within the premises of Analog Devices Philippines facility to make the program easily accessible to employees. The program started in July 2012 and expected to complete the course in 2014.

ADI Samples Program

The Academe samples program provides ADI partner university engineering faculty and student access to ADI product samples for use in their thesis and electronic projects. The initial set of ADI free samples were composed of 7400 units of 20 assorted ADI products representing the most commonly used parts for analog circuit design applications.  Currently the ADI samples program has been deployed to 10 partner universities.

ADI Donations Program

The Analog Devices donations program is designed to strengthen Microelectronics engineering education in the Philippines. As a technology company, partnership with the university to improve and develop technical engineering courses will be important for future supply of hiring competent engineers for the company. The donation program includes specific target competencies such as Digital Signal Processing, Test & Measurements and ADI Product applications. As such donations such as DSP kits, Mobile Studios, and ADI Samples are the initial set of donation provided to the universities.

In 2012, 350 pieces of RPI mobile studio boards were deployed to several Universities as donations to complement the use of the ADI parts. These were distributed to ADI Philippines partner-universities across the country for the use of engineering faculty and students in their laboratories.

ADI Internship Program

The internship program are designed to allow students be exposed to the work of an engineer.  The program is available for 5th year graduating BS engineering and current MS students. The BS interns will be involved on test development and product engineering work while the MS students will be exposed on chip design and layout work. This allows the students to be exposed to the current technology of Analog Devices. This should also provide the necessary training which will allow faster and easier adjustment for the student to transition from student work to real ADI engineering work.

We have also implemented the Faculty Immersion Program.  This program will provide a more extensive internship program for the Faculty. There were instances that students who were exposed to the internship program have surpassed their teacher’s skills and experience especially if the Faculty has no industry exposure. The Faculty Immersion is a 5 month program in which an actual project and deliverable will be assigned to the Faculty to optimize gain of industry experience.  A Faculty from Lyceum of the Philippines University-Cavite has completed the program and now back in the University using his industry experience to teach ECE students.

Research and Development Collaboration

Research and Development collaboration is directed to a strategic ADI partner university who can provide innovative ideas aligned to ADI technology. Currently, University of the Philippines is the recipient of major funding to enable the university in doing the research and partnership work with Analog Devices.

Below is a summary of donations provided to University of the Philippines in support of the research and development partnership.

  1. Professorial Chair for Microelectronics Design. The professorial chair will be used to allow Analog Devices and U.P. EEEI work in collaboration for joint projects and research work related to microelectronics engineering.
  2. Microelectronics laboratory refurbishing. The microelectronics laboratory in U.P. EEEI will be refurbished to an equivalent standard of an Analog Devices microelectronics design engineering working facility. The space capacity will accommodate 20 students working simultaneously doing IC chip design with a provision for a meeting room for 6 people with corresponding internet ready access.
  3. Lab infrastructure upgrade consisting of 20 Workstations of Dell OptiPlex Mini tower with LED monitors.  The workstations should provide the students the necessary computer hardware to perform Integrated Circuit schematic and layout design work.
  4. Cadence software license. The cadence software is the main software used in IC chip schematic and layout design.  The software license covered will be for 30 seats.
  5. Mobile Studio boards.  Fifteen 15 units of Mobile studio boards were made available to U.P. EEEI to supplement the measuring and test equipment of the institute. The mobile studio boards when used together with laptops allow an easy access to circuit supplies and measurements done by tools such as power supplies, function generator, arbitrary waveform generator, oscilloscope, and spectrum analyzer.
  6. Analog Devices parts.  A variety of Analog Devices parts composed of 732 units of 20 assorted ADI products, representing the most common and usable parts for analog circuit applications were made available to the students and faculty for their projects.

Analog Devices will be developing additional programs and projects in 2014 with U.P. EEEI in support of the electronics engineering education improvements.

Technical Assistance to Students Developing Their Thesis and Projects

The technical assistance is geared towards assisting  a BS engineering scholar of Analog Devices who has an ongoing thesis or project. The assistance is composed of the following:

  1. Access to an ADI product applications engineer to help answer questions regarding thesis and projects using ADI parts.
  2. Provide access on hardware or evaluation boards to the student on a temporary basis to get data required in the project.

Application Design Contest

The application design contest is intended to encourage innovation and use of ADI technology within the universities. This is aligned to the donation of ADI parts and mobile studio boards to partner universities to use the items in pursuing innovative projects. This competition will be for ADI partner Universities who are recipient of ADI parts but will be open to other Universities who intent to participate.  The target launch of the Application Design Contest will be in June 2014 which will culminate for a final event in October 2014.

Technical Symposium

The annual Analog Devices Philippines Technical Symposium is now a venue of sharing the latest technical work of Analog Devices in the Philippines and the Academe. The technical symposium has 7 simultaneous tracks wherein the Academe has one of the tracks.  In 2013, Thirty one (31) technical papers were submitted from the academe, wherein the top 10 papers was presented.

Likewise, 4 out of the 30 demonstration booths are coming from the academe to highlight the work of the students. The event was seen to further enhance the learning on innovation, as ADI engineers and students see the actual working models of technical work coming from both Analog Devices and Academe.
