Smoke Detection

The ADF7024 is an ultralow power, integrated transceiver for use in the license-free ISM bands at 433 MHz, 868 MHz, and 915 MHz. Its ease of use and high performance make it suitable for a wide variety of wireless applications. The ADF7024 is suitable for operation under the European ETSI EN 300-220 regulation, the North American FCC Part 15 regulation, and other similar regulatory standards.

The ADF7024 can operate under a number of predefined radio profiles. For each radio profile, optimized register settings are provided for the ADF7024 radio. This ensures that the RF communication layer works seamlessly, allowing the user to concentrate on the protocol and system level design and prototyping. The radio profiles cover common data rate and modulation options. There are six radio profiles in total, as shown in Table 1.

The ADF7024 operates with a power supply range of 2.2 V to 3.6 V and has very low power consumption in both Tx and Rx modes, enabling long lifetimes in battery-operated systems while maintaining excellent RF performance.

The low IF receiver minimizes power consumption and provides excellent sensitivity. The receiver is exceptionally linear and, therefore, is very resilient to the presence of interferers in spectrally noisy environments. The highly efficient transmitter has programmable output power up to 13.5 dBm and automatic power amplifier (PA) ramping to meet transient spurious specifications. The RF synthesizer comprises a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), a low noise fractional-N phase-locked loop (PLL) and a loop filter, all of which are fully integrated and automatically calibrated. This agile frequency synthesizer facilitates the implementation of frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) systems.

The smart wake mode (SWM) allows the ADF7024 to wake up autonomously from sleep using the internal wake-up timer without intervention from the host processor. This functionality allows carrier sense, packet sniffing, and packet reception while the host processor is in sleep, thereby reducing overall system current consumption.

The ADF7024 eases the processing burden of the host processor by integrating the lower layers of a typical communication protocol stack. The host processor can configure the ADF7024 using a simple command-based protocol over a standard 4-wire SPI interface. A single-byte command transitions the radio between states or performs a radio function.

A complete wireless solution can be built using a small number of external discrete components and a host processor (typically a microcontroller).

The ADM2561E, ADM2563E, ADM2565E, and ADM2567E are 3 kV rms signal and power isolated RS-485 transceivers. These devices are designed for balanced transmission lines and comply with ANSI/TIA/EIA-485-A-98 and ISO 8482:1987(E). The devices pass radiated emissions testing to the EN 55032 Class B standard with margin on a 2-layer printed circuit board (PCB) using two small external 0402 ferrites on isolated power and ground pins. The device features an integrated, low electro-magnetic interference (EMI), isolated dc-to-dc converter, which eliminates the need for an external isolated power supply. The isolation barrier provides immunity to system level electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards. The family of isolator devices features ±12 kV contact and ±15 kV air IEC61000-4-2 ESD protection on the RS-485 A, B, Y, and Z pins. The devices also features cable invert pins, allowing the user to quickly correct reversed cable connection on the A, B, Y, and Z bus pins while maintaining full receiver fail-safe performance.

Slew rate limited versions are available, which are optimized for low speed over long cable runs, and have a maximum data rate of 500 kbps. Half duplex and full duplex variants are available. The full duplex generics allow independent cable inversion of the driver and receiver for additional flexibility.

The ADM2861E, ADM2863E, ADM2865E, and ADM2867E are 5.7 kV rms signal and power isolated RS-485 transceivers. The ADM3061E/ADM3062E/ADM3063E/ADM3064E/ADM3065E/ADM3066E/ADM3067E/ADM3068E are 3.0 V to 5.5 V, IEC electrostatic discharge (ESD) protected RS-485 transceivers, allowing the devices to withstand ±12 kV contact discharges on the transceiver bus pins without latch-up or damage. The ADM3062E/ADM3064E/ADM3066E/ADM3068E feature a V_IO logic supply pin that allows a flexible digital interface capable of operating as low as 1.62 V.

The ADM3065E/ADM3066E/ADM3067E/ADM3068E are suitable for high speed, 50 Mbps, bidirectional data communication on multipoint bus transmission lines. The ADM3061E/ADM3062E/ADM3063E/ADM3064E/ADM3065E/ADM3066E/ ADM3067E/ADM3068E feature a 1/4 unit load input impedance that allows up to 128 transceivers on a bus. The ADM3061E/ADM3062E/ADM3063E/ADM3064E models offer all of the same features as the ADM3065E/ADM3066E/ADM3067E/ADM3068E models at a low 500 kbps data rate that is suitable for operation over long cable runs.

The ADM3061E/ADM3062E/ADM3065E/ADM3066E are halfduplex RS-485 transceivers, fully compliant to the PROFIBUS^® standard with increased 2.1 V bus differential voltage at V_CC ≥ 4.5 V. The ADM3063E/ADM3064E/ADM3067E/ADM3068E are full duplex RS-485 transceiver options.

The RS-485 transceivers are available in a number of spacesaving packages, including the 10-lead, 3 mm × 3 mm lead frame chip-scale package (LFCSP), the 8-lead or 10-lead, 3 mm × 3 mm mini small outline package (MSOP), and the 8-lead or 14-lead, narrow body standard small outline packages (SOIC_N). Models with operating temperature ranges of −40°C to +125°C and −40°C to +85°C are available.

Excessive power dissipation caused by bus contention or by output shorting is prevented by a thermal shutdown circuit. If a significant temperature increase is detected in the internal driver circuitry during fault conditions, this feature forces the driver output into a high impedance state.

The ADM3061E/ADM3062E/ADM3063E/ADM3064E/ADM3065E/ADM3066E/ADM3067E/ADM3068E guarantee a logic high receiver output when the receiver inputs are shorted, open, or connected to a terminated transmission line with all drivers disabled.

Table 2 presents an overview of the ADM3061E/ADM3062E/ADM3063E/ADM3064E/ADM3065E/ADM3066E/ADM3067E/ADM3068E data rate capability across temperature, power supply, and package options. Refer to the Ordering Guide section for model numbering.

The ADM3101E is a high speed, single-channel RS-232/ITU-T V.28 transceiver interface device that operates from a single 3.3 V power supply. Low power consumption makes it ideal for battery-powered portable instruments.

The ADM3101E conforms to the EIA/TIA-232E and ITU-T V.28  specifications and operates at data rates up to 460 kbps.

All RS-232 (T_OUT and R_IN) and CMOS (T_IN and R_OUT) inputs and outputs are protected against electrostatic discharges (up to ±15 kV ESD protection).

This device is ideally suited for operation in electrically harsh environments, or where RS-232 cables are frequently being plugged/unplugged with the ±15 kV ESD protection of the I/O pins of the ADM3101E.

Four external 0.1 μF charge pump capacitors are used for the voltage doubler/inverter, permitting operation from a single 3.3 V supply.

The ADM3101E is available in both a 12-lead LFCSP and 16-lead QSOP, specified over the −40°C to +85°C temperature range.

The ADP5090 is an integrated boost regulator that converts dc power from PV cells or TEGs. The device charges storage elements such as rechargeable Li-Ion batteries, thin film batteries, super capacitors, and conventional capacitors, and powers up small electronic devices and battery-free systems.

The ADP5090 provides efficient conversion of the harvested limited power from a 16 µW to 200 mW range with sub-µW operation losses. With the internal cold-start circuit, the regulator can start operating at an input voltage as low as 380 mV. After cold startup, the regulator is functional at an input voltage range of 80 mV to 3.3 V.

By sensing the input voltage at the VIN pin, the control loop keeps the input voltage ripple in a fixed range to maintain stable dcto-dc boost conversion. The VIN OCV sensing and programmable regulation points of the input voltage allow extraction of the highest possible energy from the PV cell or TEG harvester. A programmable minimum operation threshold (MINOP) enables boost shutdown during a low light condition. In addition, the DIS_SW pin can temporarily shut down the boost regulator and is RF transmission friendly.

The charging control function of ADP5090 protects rechargeable energy storage, which is achieved by monitoring the battery voltage with programmable charging termination voltage and shutdown discharging voltage. In addition, a programmable PGOOD flag monitors the SYS voltage.

An optional primary cell battery can be connected and managed by an integrated power path management control block that automatically switches the power source from the energy harvester, rechargeable battery, and primary cell battery.

The ADP5090 is available in a 16-lead, 3 mm × 3 mm LFCSP and is rated for a −40°C to +125°C junction temperature range.

The ADPD188BI is a complete photometric system for smoke detection using optical dual wavelength technology. The module integrates a highly efficient photometric front end, two light emitting diodes (LEDs), and two photodiodes (PDs). These items are housed in a custom package that prevents light from going directly from the LED to the photodiode without first entering the smoke detection chamber.

The front end of the application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) consists of a control block, a 14-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a 20-bit burst accumulator, and three flexible, independently configurable LED drivers. The control circuitry includes flexible LED signaling and synchronous detection. The analog front end (AFE) features best-in-class rejection of signal offset and corruption due to modulated interference commonly caused by ambient light. The data output and functional configuration occur over a 1.8 V I²C interface or serial peripheral interface (SPI) port.

The ADPD1080/ADPD1081 are highly efficient, photometric front ends, each with an integrated 14-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and a 20-bit burst accumulator that works with flexible light emitting diode (LED) drivers. The ADPD1080/ADPD1081 stimulate an LED and measures the corresponding optical return signal. The data output and functional configuration occur over a 1.8 V I²C interface on the ADPD1080 or a serial port interface (SPI) on the ADPD1081. The control circuitry includes flexible LED signaling and synchronous detection.

The analog front end (AFE) features rejection of signal offset and corruption due to modulated interference commonly caused by ambient light without the need for optical filters or dc cancellation circuitry that requires external control.

Couple the ADPD1080/ADPD1081 with a low capacitance photodiode of <100 pF for optimal performance. The ADPD1080/ADPD1081 can be used with any LED. The ADPD1080 is available in a 16-ball, 2.46 mm × 1.4 mm WLCSP and a 28-lead, 4 mm × 4 mm LFCSP. The SPI only version, ADPD1081, is available in a 17-ball, 2.46 mm × 1.4 mm WLCSP.

The ADuM7440/ADuM7441/ADuM7442 are 4-channel digital isolators based on the Analog Devices, Inc.,  iCoupler^® technology. Combining high speed CMOS and monolithic air core transformer technologies, these isolation components provide outstanding performance characteristics superior to the alternatives, such as optocoupler devices and other integrated couplers.

The ADuM7440/ADuM7441/ADuM7442 family of quad 1 kV digital isolation devices is packaged in a small 16-lead QSOP. While most 4-channel isolators come in 16-lead wide SOIC packages, the ADuM7440/ADuM7441/ADuM7442 free almost 70% of board space and yet can still withstand high isolation voltage and meet UL regulatory requirements. In addition to the space savings, the ADuM7440/ADuM7441/ADuM7442 offer a lower price than 2.5 kV or 5 kV isolators where only functional isolation is needed.

This family, like many Analog Devices isolators, offers very low power consumption, consuming one-tenth to one-sixth the power of comparable isolators at comparable data rates up to 25 Mbps. Despite the low power consumption, all models of the ADuM7440/ADuM7441/ADuM7442 provide low pulse width distortion (<5 ns for C grade). In addition, every model has an input glitch filter to protect against extraneous noise disturbances.

The ADuM7440/ADuM7441/ADuM7442 isolators provide four independent isolation channels in a variety of channel configurations and two data rates (see the Ordering Guide) up to 25 Mbps. All models operate with the supply voltage on either side ranging from 3.0 V to 5.5 V, providing compatibility with lower voltage systems as well as enabling voltage translation functionality across the isolation barrier. All products also have an output default high logic state in the absence of the input power.

The LTC2862A is a low power, 20Mbps or 250kbps RS485/RS422 transceiver operating on 3V to 5.5V supplies with ±60V overvoltage fault protection on the interface pins during all modes of operation, including power-down. Improvements were made to the LTC2862 for greater robustness and signal integrity: ±40kV HBM and Level 4 IEC ESD protection on the interface pins; increased resistance to electrical overstress; increased receiver noise immunity; additional receiver noise filtering on the LTC2862A-2; and an improved failsafe function optimized for high speed in the LTC2862A-1 and noise rejection in the LTC2862A-2. Low EMI slew rate limited data transmission is available in the 250kbps LTC2862A-2 option, while the LTC2862A-1 operates to 20Mbps.

Extended ±25V input common mode range and full failsafe operation improve data communication reliability in electrically noisy environments and in the presence of large ground loop voltages.

Two different board layouts are available for the ADF7024. In the first layout there are separate matching circuits for the single ended PA and differential LNA. This layout is used on the EVAL-ADF7024DB1 (matched for 862-928MHz) and EVAL-ADF7024DB3 (matched for 431-435MHz) evaluation boards.

In the second layout there is a single combined matching network connecting the single ended PA and the differential LNA. This layout is used on the EVAL-ADF7023DB2 (matched for 862-928MHz) and EVAL-ADF7023DB4 (matched for 431- 435MHz) evaluation boards.

Both layouts are 4-layer boards and use 0402 passives.

The EVAL-ADM2563EEBZ and the EVAL-ADM2863EEBZ allow for the simplified, efficient evaluation of the 3 kV rms ADM2563E and the 5.7 kV rms ADM2863E 500 kbps signal and power isolated, full-duplex RS-485 transceivers, respectively.

The ADM2563E and the ADM2863E each feature an integrated, isolated, dc-to-dc converter that provides power to the isolated side of the device with no additional ICs required.

An on-board ADP7104 low dropout (LDO) regulator accepts an input voltage of 3.3 V to 20 V and regulates the voltage to a selectable 3.3 V or 5 V supply for the V_CC pin of the ADM2563E and the ADM2863E. The LDO regulator can be bypassed to power the V_CC pin of the ADM2563E and the ADM2863E directly.

A screw terminal block on the evaluation boards allows connection to the flexible V_IO logic supply pin of the ADM2563E/ADM2863E. This connection allows the ADM2563E/ADM2863E to operate with a digital input/output (I/O) voltage from 1.7 V to 5.5 V, which enables communication with nodes using either a 1.8 V or 2.5 V power supply. The V_IO pin can also be supplied from the ADP7104 regulated supply.

The EVAL-ADM2563EEBZ and the EVAL-ADM2863EEBZ come with options to evaluate the ADM2563E or the ADM2863E in an individual system. Digital and RS-485 bus signals are easily accessible via the screw terminal blocks on each evaluation board. Each digital input is configured via the on-board jumper options.

Alternative methods can provide the transmit data input (TxD) signal to the ADM2563E or the ADM2863E. An LTC6900 oscillator is included on each evaluation board and can be optionally configured to provide a clock signal for the TxD digital input within a 10 kHz to 250 kHz range. For optimal signal integrity, use the on-board Subminiature Version A (SMA) connector to connect an external data signal.

The EVAL-ADM2563EEBZ and the EVAL-ADM2863EEBZ footprint for the full-duplex, isolated RS-485 transceivers is in a 10.15 mm × 10.05 mm, 28-lead, small outline, wide body with fine pitch (SOIC_W_FP) package. The EVAL-ADM2563EEBZ board is populated with the ADM2563E 3 kV rms, isolated RS-485 transceiver. The EVAL-ADM2863EEBZ is populated with the ADM2863E 5.7 kV rms, isolated RS-485 transceiver. The two evaluation boards differ only by the isolated RS-485 device populated on U3.

The ADP5090 demonstration platform is a plug and play evaluation board (ADP5090-2-EVALZ) for energy harvesting. The demonstration platform includes the photovoltaic (PV) panel and all of the power management to enable devices to be powered using energy harvesting. It is based on the Alta Devices^™ PV cell, or the IXYS^™ Corporation PV cell, and the ADP5090 energy harvesting power management IC.

The ADP5090 demonstration platform converts light energy to electrical energy. The PV panel converts the light to 0.8 V electrical energy. The ADP5090 boosts the input voltage from 0.8 V to 3.5 V and stores the energy in a supercapacitor.

In addition, there is an on-board, low dropout (LDO) regulator that powers loads at lower voltage rails than the 3.5 V stored in the supercapacitor. The Alta Devices PV cell is a light harvesting gallium arsenide-based cell. The PV cell is optimized for indoor environments, where lux levels are typically 200 lux to 1000 lux.

The ADP5090 is an ultra low power, synchronous, boost dc-to-dc regulator. The ADP5090 runs from input voltages of 0.38 V to 3.3 V and provides a high efficiency solution with an integrated power switch, synchronous rectifier, and battery management. The demo platform provides an easy way to evaluate the device.

The demo platform system also plugs directly into the Analog Devices WSN demo platform.

The EVAL-ADPD1080Z-PRX evaluation kit provides users with a simple means of connecting with the ADPD1080 hardware, collecting data from the ADPD1080, and evaluating long range proximity capabilities. The ADPD1080 hardware is configured with a large area, p-type, intrinsic, n-type (PIN) semiconductor photodiode as a proximity sensor. In this configuration, motion and proximity in front of the EVAL-ADPD1080Z-PRX are measured by detecting the amount of infrared (IR) light reflected off of objects and the change in IR light as objects move relative to the EVAL-ADPD1080Z-PRX.

The evaluation kit requires the EVAL-ADPDM3Z and the Applications Wavetool, which can be downloaded from the EVAL-ADPD1080Z-PRX product page. The Applications Wavetool is a graphical user interface (GUI) that provides users with low level and high level configurability, real-time data analysis, and user datagram protocol (UDP) transfer capabilities so that the evaluation board can easily connect to a PC.

The USB port of the PC powers the EVAL-ADPDM3Z and the EVAL-ADPD1080Z-PRX. On-board voltage regulators provide voltage supplies for the ADPD1080.

The evaluation board schematic indicates signal names for easy identification.

The EVAL-ADPD188BIZ-S2 evaluation board provides users with a simple means of evaluating the ADPD188BI optical module along with the EVAL-CHAMBER smoke chamber for smoke and aerosol detection applications.

The evaluation system is composed of the EVAL-ADPD188BIZ-S2 evaluation board, the EVAL-ADPDUCZ microcontroller board, the optional EVAL-CHAMBER smoke chamber, and the Wavetool Evaluation Software graphical user interface (GUI). The software provides users with both low level and high level configurability, real-time frequency and time domain analysis, and user datagram protocol (UDP) transfer capability so that the evaluation board can easily interface to the user development system.

The EVAL-ADPD188BIZ-S2 is powered through the ribbon cable from the EVAL-ADPDUCZ microcontroller board (ordered separately).

This reference design plus related software is designed and tested to meet UL 217/UL 268 and similar smoke/fire detection standards. To address the needs of different customers a number of solution offerings are available which are summarized in the table below. The hardware is Arduino form factor compatible and is designed to accelerate prototyping and the evaluation of the embedded smoke detection algorithm. The hardware is compromised of the EVAL-CN0537-ARDZ reference design which is described the CN0537 circuit note and the supporting EVAL-ADICUP3029 microcontroller board. The Data (EVAL-CN0537-DATA) package provides an extensive smoke dataset taken at UL certified facilities for those who wish to develop their own algorithm and the CN0537 source code - excluding the detection algorithm. The Algorithm (EVAL-CN0537-ALGO) package includes everything in the Data package and a UL certified smoke detection algorithm with associated algorithm project files.

Since the 1970s, smoke detectors have become commonplace in commercial and residential buildings. Two basic types of detectors exist today, the ionization type that uses radioactive matter to ionize the air and checks for an electrical imbalance, and the photoelectric type that uses a light source aimed at an angle away from a photodetector and checks for photodetector current caused by the light reflecting from airborne particles to the photodiode. Although a combination solution of both types is recommended, the photoelectric smoke detector is more popular due to its improved reliability in detecting common house fires and faster response times to smoldering fires.

Unfortunately, smoke detector technology and regulations have also remained virtually the same since the 1970s despite the advances in electronics and common household materials through the decades. New revisions in standards, such as ANSI/UL 217 and ANSI/UL 268, published by Underwriters Laboratory (UL), or the NFPA^® 72 National Fire Alarm Code, published by the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), aim to address this gap by placing more complex requirements on modern smoke detector designs. Other worldwide standards, such as EN 14604, EN 54, and ISO 7240 will likely add similar tests to address this and other concerns in the future, making it more important to have more advanced sensing capabilities.

The goal of these updated standards is to increase safety and decrease the number of fire related deaths by reducing the number of false alarms that are generated from everyday activity. For example, in addition to the traditional fire and smoke sensitivity tests, the 8th edition of UL 217 and the 7th edition of UL 268 now requires that smoke detectors do not produce a false alarm during nuisance events, like cooking. Therefore, modern smoke detectors must be able to distinguish between a cooking nuisance event and a fire event. Traditionally, this goal required a complicated solution with multiple sensor technologies and a level of artificial intelligence. However, the use of the ADPD188BI makes this solution significantly more simple to implement.

The circuit shown in Figure 1 is a tested and verified smoke detector reference design with an available algorithm and a data set based on the ADPD188BI optical module. For easy and rapid development, the design is made compatible with the Arduino form factor controller platforms. Software and embedded algorithms combined with the hardware can be used to evaluate smoke and fire tests specified in 8th edition of the UL 217 and the 7th edition of the UL 268 standards. Verified algorithms are available for direct use to help deploy the smoke detection solution faster, and additional data can also be collected and added into the algorithm to adapt it for other standards.

Collecting more than 1000 sensor datasets at certified testing facilities provided a large statistical representation which the algorithm was trained and tuned. The accompanying embedded software initializes, calibrates, temperature compensates, pre-processes data, and implements the algorithm engine.

The EVAL-CN0537-ARDZ uses the ADPD188BI integrated optical sensor (with LED and PD) along with an optimized smoke chamber design to sense and measure smoke particles using a single calibrated device. The hardware design also can handle environmental nuisances, like humidity/dew, using heater resistors to dry the air inside the smoke chamber. The hardware is an Arduino form factor design and can be use used directly with many different microcontrollers, which provides features such as a buzzer, push button, LED indicator, and micro SD slot for storing data.

The CN0537 reference design includes a complete data and software offering designed to accelerate smoke/fire detection application development.

The Data (EVAL-CNO537-DATA) package provides an extensive (1000+) smoke dataset taken at UL-217 certified facilities for those who wish to develop their own algorithm. It includes the CN0537 source code for initialization, calibration, environmental compensation, data pre-processing - but excludes the detection algorithm.

The Algorithm (EVAL-CN0537-ALGO) package includes everything in the Data package and adds a UL certified smoke detection algorithm and associated algorithm project files.
